Ko-fi alternatives for Indian creators

By Jash Ambaliya · Founder, BuyMeATea · Competitor details verified 3 August 2026

The short version

Ko-fi works fine in India — this isn’t the Buy Me a Coffee situation, where the payout wall stops you outright. Ko-fi is also cheaper than us on tips: 0% against our 5%. If most of your supporters are outside India, stop reading and use Ko-fi.

The reason to look for an alternative is narrower than the fee. Ko-fi settles into a Stripe or PayPal account in that account’s currency, and it has no UPI at checkout. So when an Indian fan supports an Indian creator, the money takes a currency round-trip it never needed, and the fan has to reach for a card instead of the payment app they actually use. Neither of those shows up as a “fee”, and together they can cost more than the percentage does.

  1. 1.Ko-fi’s 0% applies to tips only. Its own help pages describe a 5% fee on the free plan for shop sales, memberships and commissions. Ko-fi help centre.
  2. 2.Ko-fi processes through Stripe and PayPal, and payouts arrive in the currency of that connected account. Indian creators can sign up, but UPI is not a checkout option. Ko-fi on Stripe country support.
  3. 3.Ko-fi Gold is reported at $12/month, with annual billing no longer offered to new subscribers. Creators who subscribed earlier may be grandfathered lower, which is why older write-ups still quote $6. Ko-fi’s help pages block automated checks, so this figure comes from independent write-ups rather than from Ko-fi directly — treat it as indicative and confirm at ko-fi.com/gold.

When Ko-fi is the better choice

We’d genuinely point you at Ko-fi if any of these describe you:

When an INR-native platform nets more

The case flips when your supporters are in India. A 0% fee on money that then loses a conversion spread on the way to your bank is not free, and a checkout that can’t take UPI loses supporters before the fee is ever charged — that loss is invisible, because you never see the payment that didn’t happen.

We settle in rupees on a T+2 banking cycle with the UTR reference shown on every payout, and recurring support runs on UPI Autopay mandates rather than card-on-file, which fails far less often in India. That’s the trade: a stated percentage, against a conversion and a checkout your audience may not use.

If Buy Me a Coffee is what you’re actually comparing against, that’s a different and more clear-cut situation — we cover it separately, along with Patreon and two other Indian options.

Questions, answered

Does Ko-fi work in India?

Yes — unlike Buy Me a Coffee, Ko-fi accepts Indian creators and you can withdraw. The catch isn't access, it's currency: Ko-fi pays into a connected Stripe or PayPal account in that account's currency, so money from an Indian fan to an Indian creator still takes a conversion on the way. Your fans also can't pay by UPI. Verified against Ko-fi's own help pages on 3 August 2026.

Is Ko-fi cheaper than BuyMeATea?

On tips, yes — Ko-fi charges 0% where we charge 5%. If your supporters are mostly outside India and you're taking one-off tips, Ko-fi is very hard to beat on cost and we'd tell you to use it. The comparison changes when your fans are in India: conversion spread and the absence of UPI both cost you, and neither shows up as a "fee". For memberships and shop sales Ko-fi's free plan takes 5%, which is above our 4% on Kadak.

Can my fans pay me by UPI on Ko-fi?

No. Ko-fi's checkout runs on Stripe and PayPal. For an Indian audience that matters more than the fee — UPI is how most people in India actually pay, and asking for a card instead is where a lot of would-be supporters stop.

Should I use both?

That's a reasonable setup and we won't pretend otherwise. Several creators keep a Ko-fi page for an international audience and an INR page for their Indian one. There's no exclusivity on either side and nothing stops you linking both from the same bio.

What does BuyMeATea not do that Ko-fi does?

Ko-fi has a shop, commissions, and a genuinely mature feature set built over more than a decade — we have none of that history. It also has real brand recognition, which matters when a supporter is deciding whether a payment page looks trustworthy. If your income is mostly international, Ko-fi's currency handling is an advantage rather than a cost.

How we put this together

We publish this platform, so treat it as an interested source and check anything that would change your decision. Our own figures are read directly from the code that charges them, so they cannot drift from what you’d actually be billed. Ko-fi’s figures come from its own help centre, linked inline and checked on 3 August 2026; where a number could not be confirmed from Ko-fi directly it is labelled as indicative rather than stated as fact. We have not independently tested Ko-fi’s payout flow.
