Buy Me a Coffee alternatives for Indian creators

Buy Me a Coffee routes all creator payouts through Stripe, and its published list of supported payout countries does not include India. Indian creators can often receive support and then find they cannot withdraw it to an Indian bank account.
The practical alternatives are Ko-fi (0% on tips, but pays out via Stripe or PayPal in foreign currency), Patreon (10% plus conversion, USD-centric, no UPI at checkout), and India-native platforms including BuyMeATea, Playto Pay and Buy My Chai, which settle in rupees to an Indian bank account.

Why your Buy Me a Coffee payout isn't working
Buy Me a Coffee uses Stripe for both payment processing and creator payouts — money moves into your Stripe account first, then to your bank (BMC's own documentation). That single design decision is where Indian creators get stuck: BMC can only pay out where Stripe supports payouts, and their support list runs to 47 countries with India absent from it.
This isn't a criticism of Buy Me a Coffee — it's a straightforward consequence of building on one processor's payout coverage. It just happens to exclude one of the largest creator populations on the internet.
There are two further frictions worth knowing before you invest in any platform. BMC requires a $10 balance before you can request a withdrawal at all (BMC FAQ), on top of its 5% transaction fee. And where a workaround does exist, your earnings arrive in dollars — so a currency conversion spread comes out of the total, and what you've done is legally an export of services, with the FIRA/FIRC paperwork that implies.

- 2.Patreon moved new creators to a flat 10% platform fee on 4 August 2025. Pages created before that keep legacy rates (Lite 5% / Pro 8% / Premium ~11–12%), but only while the page stays published. Payment processing (~3%), 2.5% currency conversion and payout fees are all additional.
- 3.Ko-fi Gold is reported at $12/month, with annual billing no longer offered to new subscribers. Creators who subscribed earlier may be grandfathered at a lower rate, which is why older write-ups still quote $6. Ko-fi's own help pages block automated checks, so this figure comes from independent write-ups dated July 2026 rather than from Ko-fi directly — treat it as indicative and confirm at ko-fi.com/gold.

Ko-fi
The closest thing to a like-for-like replacement, and genuinely cheaper than us on headline fee: 0% on tips, against our 5%. It accepts Indian creator signups without the payout wall.
- Best for
- Creators whose audience is mostly outside India, taking one-off tips rather than running memberships.
- Watch out for
- Payouts land in your connected Stripe or PayPal account in that account's currency, so the INR conversion and the bank spread are yours to absorb. Your Indian fans can't pay by UPI. The free plan also takes 5% on shop sales, memberships and commissions — the 0% applies to tips only.
Patreon
The most mature membership tooling in the category by some distance. If your business is a paid content library with tiers and back catalogue, nothing here matches its depth.
- Best for
- Established creators with an international membership base and a real archive to gate.
- Watch out for
- The headline 10% isn't the number that matters — it's 10% plus roughly 3% processing plus 2.5% currency conversion plus payout fees. For an Indian creator paid in USD, that stack compounds. No UPI at checkout.
Playto Pay
India-focused, and the one alternative here with a clear answer for international income: automated FIRA documentation, which is real paperwork we don't handle for you.
- Best for
- Indian creators earning meaningfully from abroad who need the compliance trail generated for them.
- Watch out for
- Every figure we have is from their own marketing. We haven't tested it. Verify directly.
Buy My Chai
An Indian zero-fee tip jar accepting UPI — the simplest proposition on this list.
- Best for
- Creators who want a plain UPI tip jar and nothing else.
- Watch out for
- Launched in June 2026, so there is little public track record on payout reliability yet — which is the thing that matters most and takes the longest to prove. That's not a knock; it's the same thing you should say about us.
BuyMeATea ours
Built for the case the global platforms handle worst: an Indian creator with an Indian audience. Fans pay by UPI in about ten seconds without an account; you get rupees in an Indian bank on a T+2 cycle with a UTR reference against every payout. Memberships run on UPI Autopay rather than card-on-file.
- Best for
- India-based creators with a mostly Indian audience who want UPI checkout, rupee settlement, and recurring support that doesn't depend on card mandates.
- Watch out for
- We're new, and we have no international payout story at all. If your fans are mostly abroad, we're probably the wrong choice — see below.
When BuyMeATea is the wrong answer
We'd rather you pick correctly than pick us. Four cases where you should use something else:
- Your audience is mostly international. UPI doesn't help you and rupee settlement isn't what you need. Ko-fi's 0% on tips will beat our 5%.
- Digital products are your main business. We're a support platform, not a storefront. Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy are built for that and we're not pretending otherwise.
- You need deep membership tooling over a large back catalogue. Patreon has years of work in that area that we simply don't.
- You want a name your fans already recognise. A supporter who's seen a Ko-fi button a hundred times needs no reassurance. We haven't earned that yet.
Switching from Buy Me a Coffee
Read this first: your existing supporters do not transfer automatically, and no platform can move them for you. Anyone supporting you monthly on BMC has to re-subscribe wherever you land. Plan for that before you switch, not after.
- 1Export your supporter list from BMC. You'll need a way to tell people where you've gone. Do this while your old account still works.
- 2Claim your username. buymeatea.online/yourname, free, about a minute.
- 3Verify PAN and bank account. Penny-drop verification, usually clears in minutes. No company or GST number needed.
- 4Update your links. Bio, video descriptions, README, pinned post, email footer. Everywhere the old link lives.
- 5Post one clear 'I've moved' note. Explain why — 'my old platform couldn't pay out to Indian banks' is a reason supporters understand immediately.

What is the cheapest way to accept donations in India?

On headline fee alone, Ko-fi charges 0% on tips and is cheaper than our 5%. For a creator whose supporters are in India, the headline fee isn't the whole cost: Ko-fi pays out via Stripe or PayPal in foreign currency, so conversion and bank spread come out of the total, and supporters can't pay by UPI. A platform settling directly in INR often nets more despite a higher stated percentage — but if your fans are abroad, Ko-fi's maths wins.
Do I need a GST number to accept creator support in India?

No. A PAN and a bank account in your own name is enough to start receiving support on BuyMeATea. A GSTIN is optional if you already have one. This isn't tax advice — what you owe on the income you receive is unchanged either way.
Can I accept recurring monthly support over UPI?

Yes, through UPI Autopay. Membership tiers run on UPI Autopay mandates rather than card-on-file recurring, which is the more reliable rail for recurring payments in India — card mandates fail far more often here. Tiers are part of the Kadak plan at ₹299 per month, GST included.
What happens to my members if I stop paying for Kadak?

Nothing happens to them. Existing members keep their UPI Autopay mandates and that money keeps reaching you. What pauses is creating new tiers, taking on new members, publishing new members-only posts, and CSV exports. If you cancel, you keep every Kadak feature until the month you've already paid for runs out.
When do creators get paid on BuyMeATea?

Settlements run on a T+2 banking cycle to your verified Indian bank account, and every payout shows its UTR reference in your dashboard. There's no minimum balance before you can be paid.
How we put this together
BuyMeATea is our own product, and it appears first in the table above. We've tried to earn that placement by being accurate about everyone else rather than flattering ourselves — including saying plainly where a competitor is cheaper or better than we are.
