Does Buy Me a Coffee work in India?

What actually happens

Buy Me a Coffee routes all creator payouts through Stripe Connect. Signing up and building a page works from anywhere — nothing blocks an Indian creator at that stage, which is exactly why this catches people out. Supporters can pay you, and your balance goes up.

The problem appears at withdrawal. Connecting a payout account requires a Stripe account in a country Buy Me a Coffee supports for payouts, and India does not appear on that published list. Creators typically discover this after they have already been paid, when they try to move the money and find there is no valid destination to connect.

Workarounds people suggest, and why they’re risky

The common advice is to register a Stripe account in a supported country, or to use a friend or relative abroad as the payout destination. We’d avoid both. Stripe requires the account holder to be genuinely resident and legally able to operate in that country, and misrepresenting that is a straightforward way to have the account frozen with the balance still inside it. Routing your income through someone else’s account also makes it their income for tax purposes, in their country and yours.

The realistic options are to accept that the existing balance may be stuck and contact Buy Me a Coffee support about it directly, and to collect future support somewhere that settles in India.

What Indian creators use instead

Several platforms pay out to an Indian bank account in rupees, and at least two of them accept UPI at checkout, which matters more than the fee if your supporters are in India. Being straight about it: we are one of those platforms. BuyMeATea settles in INR to an Indian bank on a T+2 cycle, takes UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets, and charges 5% on the free plan. You need a PAN and a bank account in your own name. If your audience is mostly outside India, Ko-fi is probably a better fit than we are, and we explain why.
